Job Summary

The Manager of Data Engineering will lead a team of data engineers in the development, maintenance, and evolution of data infrastructure critical to analytics, reporting, application platforms, and other data initiatives in the college. This position may serve other colleges or units through the collaborative efforts of Information Technology Partners.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Data Management and Operations
    • Direct and oversee the design, implementation, and management of the college’s data infrastructure
    • Lead and manage the college data engineering team in building scalable, reliable data pipelines for ingestion, transformation, and distribution of data across multiple data and application platforms.
    • Manage, maintain, monitor, and evaluate data architecture, pipeline processes, virtualization, and storage
    • Provide technical guidance on performance standards, security measures, and systems analysis
    • Design, construct, install, test and maintain data management systems
    • Ensure systems meet business requirements and industry best practices
    • Design and implement effective database solutions and models to store and retrieve college data
    • Develop and manage real-time data pipelines across various data sources and systems
    • Implement data quality processes, ensuring the integrity and availability of all data
    • Monitor system performance and providing solutions to ensure scalable and efficient data flows
    • Troubleshoot data-related issues and implement fixes
  • Strategic Planning and Development
    • Contribute to the data strategy roadmap in collaboration with Associate Director of Data Strategy, identifying opportunities for data infrastructure enhancements and innovations
    • Work collaboratively with IT Solutions Architect to design, provide specifications, and assist in the development of data infrastructure
    • Evaluate and recommend new technologies and tools for improving data processing and storage capabilities
  • Team Management and Development
    • Manage the recruitment, training, and professional development of data engineering team members, promoting a collaborative and productive work environment
    • Define clear team goals and monitor performance, offering feedback and support to ensure professional growth and success
  • Teamwork, Campus Collaboration, and Leadership
    • Align work with shared team values of IT Partners @ Gies
    • Collaborate with data professionals in other university units to develop shared processes, models, and best practices for utilization of data resources
    • Represent college on campus initiative, committees, and working groups focused on networking, infrastructure, cloud computing, and technology innovation

Specialty Factors

• Five (5) years of work experience in IT-related functions such as hardware/software support, programming, network design, network engineering, IT systems integration, or closely related field, which includes supervisory or lead worker capacity. College coursework which includes Information Technology (IT), IT Management, Programming, IT Systems, or a closely related discipline may be substituted as follows: 30 semester hours equals one (1) year, Associate’s Degree (60 semester hours) equals eighteen (18) months, 90 semester hours equals two (2) years, Bachelor’s Degree (120 semester hours) equals three (3) years).
• Demonstrated experience in database administration and data engineering.
• Experience in a supervisory role.

Preferred Qualifications

Technology or computer-science related degrees
Experience working in higher education
Experience with Microsoft SQL Server
Experience with Microsoft Azure and a strong understanding of Azure capabilities and limitations
Experience working in collaboration with or support of data analytics or application development teams

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

•Demonstrated ability to build and support an inclusive team environment where team members have opportunities to contribute and grow •Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams and communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders •Proven track record in designing and implementing scalable data infrastructures •Strong expertise in data modeling and data pipeline processes

Appointment Information

This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 5030 - Information Technology Manager/Administrative Coordinator position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the search close date. Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience, while also considering internal equity. The salary range for this position starts at $100,000  Professional development and other advancement opportunities are also available. This position is not eligible for visa sponsorship.
