POSITION:               Mechanical Supervisor – Buildings and Grounds Department

REPORTS TO:          Director of Facilities and Maintenance Manager

PRIMARY FUNCTION: The Mechanical Supervisor will manage internal tradesmen and subcontracted mechanical service contractors for the 39 Hartford Public Schools. Responsibilities include:

  • Certify safety and health training of tradesmen
  • Oversee testing and repairs of mechanical, electrical, and life-safety systems
  • Manage mechanical department operating budget
  • Enforce safety protocols for asbestos, HAZMAT handling, etc.
  • Supervise snow-removal operations

TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Manage (schedule and distribute) daily workloads of assigned employees
  • Maintain punctuality for daily operations, emergencies, and meetings (including phone calls, texts, emails, etc.)
  • Utilize Microsoft Office suite (specifically, Word, Excel, Outlook, and OneNote) and shared drives efficiently
  • Address mechanical system deficiencies reported by head custodians
  • Use Brightly work order system for service calls
  • Maintain inspection and testing records of filter changes, life safety systems, elevators, and others as assigned
  • Manage employee attendance and leave requests
  • Hire and performance manage employees following union contract and district procedures
  • Collaborate with other departments
  • Oversee vehicle maintenance and safety
  • Supervise snow events (plowing and salting)
  • Manage building management systems, including scheduling and sequence of operations
  • Maintain professional relationships with all stakeholders, including departments, agencies, school administrators, custodians, and contractors
  • Remain on-call for emergencies
  • Dispatch internal tradesmen as needed
  • Manage subcontractors, suppliers, and external agencies such as, but not limited to:
  • CONTRACTORS - HVAC, BMS controls, life safety, electrical, small equipment repair, backflow prevention, drain cleaning, swimming pools, emergency generator contractors, elevator services, and others
  • SUPPLIERS - HVAC, plumbing, electrical, air filters, equipment repair, tools, diesel fuel, playground safety chips, automotive, snow removal equipment, top soils, cold patch, and others
  • AGENCIES: City of Hartford Departments (Fire Marshal, Department of Public Works, License and Inspections, and Police Department), MDC, Eversource, CNG, State of Connecticut DEEP, EPA, HHHR, and others

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • High school diploma is required
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite (specifically, Word, Excel, Outlook, and OneNote) and internet use
  • 10 years of HVAC experience
  • Knowledge of building automation systems
  • 10 years of experience supervising tradesmen
  • Strong organizational and communication (written and oral) skills
  • Must communicate well with others, both written and oral communication
  • Leadership experience in educational settings preferred
  • Ability to work in a union environment
  • Capable of adapting to fast-paced, demanding environment
  • Experience and skill in contingency planning and disaster response

CERTIFICATION / LICENSE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Valid Connecticut driver’s license is required
  • State of Connecticut HVAC license is required, specifically an S2 license

EVALUATION: Evaluated in accordance with Local 818 Agreement

SALARY AND TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: This is a 12-month work year position, 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. daily. Salary will be in accordance with experience level and 2024-2025 Salary Schedule 67 - $82,336 to $101,166 for Buildings and Grounds supervisors.

UNION AFFILIATION: The Board recognizes Local 818 of Council 4, American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, AFL-CIO as the exclusive bargaining unit for this position.
