Description 

 I) Job Purpose

The LVN provides nursing care to individuals in behavioral health services under the direction of a clinical supervisor (RN, APRN, PA or physician).  The nurse works as part of a team in the clinical setting to ensure the individual obtains behavioral and physical health services.

II) Essential Functions

A) Provide quality client care using the nursing process, considering both behavioral and physical health needs.

B) Identified status added due to ability to work in all areas requiring medical care in Substance Use Disorder Programs, including Admissions, In-patient Detox Unit, Ambulatory Detox Unit, and Office Based Opioid Treatment.

C) Conduct focused assessments, identify changes, and promptly report to clinical supervisor.

D) Collaborate with RN to develop and implement individual care plans, including medication management and health education.

E) Document all contacts and interventions in clinical records within specified timelines.

F) Monitor vital signs and administer injections and medications according to orders and guidelines.

G) Coordinate care continuity after emergency visits and hospitalizations.

H) Promote communication and collegiality among healthcare team members.

I) Maintain medication inventory and ensure adherence to protocols.

J) Respond to medical and program emergencies with appropriate interventions.

K) Anticipate and prevent crisis situations based on individual needs, ensuring a safe and orderly program environment.

L) Adhere to infection control protocols and maintain medical supplies.

M) Participate in identifying and monitoring quality care outcomes.

N) Uphold professional and ethical conduct, maintaining confidentiality of individuals and agency information.

O) Contribute to new employee and student learning experiences.

P) Adhere to agency training and continuing education requirements.

Q) Attend scheduled nursing meetings to facilitate professional growth.

S) Performs other job duties or responsibilities as requested or assigned.

III) Knowledge of Laws, Regulations, Policies/Procedures, Skills, and Abilities

A) MHMR Tarrant Policies and Procedures   

B) Texas Nurse Practice Act Including LVN scope of practice standards.

C) Texas Health and Human Services Mental Health Rules and Statutes 

D) Medicaid Standards 

E) DSM  V 

F) ICD 10 

G) ANA Code of Ethics for Nurses 

H) Ability to work cooperatively with multidisciplinary staff.

I) Familiarity with chronic mental health, integrated health and chronic disease populations and optimal care trends.  

J) Knowledge of medications, their use and typical side effects.  

K) Ability to distinguish between medical and nursing interventions. 

L) Ability to advocate for the patient.  

M) Familiarity with trends in substance use disorder treatment.  

IV) Internal & External Customer Service

A) All participating pharmacies, Health Care Providers in the Community, Trinity Springs Pavilion, John Peter Smith Hospital, Various private hospitals in the community, Public Health Clinics

V) Travel

A) Adhere to MHMR Mileage and Travel reimbursement policy and any other aspect regarding travel.

B) Up to 5 %

C) This position may require temporary or permanent re-assignment to any MHMR Tarrant office, location, or facility as determined by program needs or the Division Director.

A) Utilized as required for position.  

Minimum Requirements 

VII) Minimum Qualifications

A) Minimum Education: High School Diploma/GED

B) Defined Education: Nursing

C) Preferences: None

D) Substitutions: None

E) Years’ Experience: One (1) year

F) Defined Experience: Psychiatric/mental health nursing or substance use disorder nursing

G) License/Certifications: Current LVN License

H) Special Courses: None

I) Supervisory Experience: None

VIII) Agency Requirements

A) All staff are required to participate in agency Emergency Preparedness and Environmental Safety programs and may be assigned by their department as a key/essential staff level function during critical events or for the purpose of sustaining business continuity.

B) This position may require temporary or permanent re-assignment to any MHMR Tarrant facility as determined by program needs and/or the Division/Director.

C) Assigned work hours may change as the needs of the agency change.

D) The Functional Title of this position may change as the needs of the agency change.

E) All work will be completed within the scheduled work hours. All non-exempt (hourly) employees are expected to clock in and clock out for each work shift, no work should be done off the clock.

F) MHMR reserves the right to change, add to or eliminate positions as it deems appropriate. 

G) Employment is at will, as well as agency needs may change.

H) Agency dress code is to be followed at all times.

I) Physical on-site presence, including regular attendance and punctuality, is an essential function of this position. Any changes or adjustments to your assigned work schedule or shift hours must be approved by your supervisor in advance.
