Job Summary

Our Campus Services’ Transportation & Parking Unit:

We are committed to providing safe and reliable transportation and parking for the University community. This includes shuttle and van service, fleet management, parking, and our award-winning CommuterChoice Program which offers a few sustainable transportation options.

Under the Direction of the Lead Auto Mechanic:

  • Maintains diesel transit buses and gasoline service vehicles/diesel and gasoline off road equipment by completing inspections and preventive maintenance requirements; correcting vehicle deficiencies; making adjustments and keeping service records.  

  • Works closely with other members of the Fleet Management Services staff to provide direct customer service through a team effort. 

  • Complies with all Harvard safety policies, as well as state and federal vehicle requirements.

Position Description

  • Performs scheduled and non-scheduled vehicle and equipment maintenance in accordance with published industry standards.

  • Determines vehicle condition by conducting inspections and diagnostic tests; identifying worn and damaged parts.

  • Complies with federal and state vehicle requirements by testing engine, safety, and combustion control standards.

  • Keeps equipment available for use by completing preventive maintenance schedules; installing component and part upgrades;

  • Corrects vehicle deficiencies by removing, repairing, adjusting, overhauling, assembling, disassembling, and replacing major assemblies, sub-assemblies, components, parts, or systems, such as, power and drive trains, electrical, air conditioning, fuel, emission, brake, steering, and hydraulics

  • Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; reading technical and regulation publications

  • Interacts with customers/ Harvard employees to understand the repair issues and defects pertaining to their vehicles

  • Completes work order forms and time sheets on a daily basis

  • Enhances maintenance department and organization reputation by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests; exploring opportunities to add value to job accomplishments.

  • Keeps shop equipment operating by following operating instructions and maintaining supplies

  • Performs daily cleaning of fleet facility and performs related duties as required

  • Supports snow removal services on campus

Basic Qualifications

  • High school graduate and nine to twelve (9-12) ASE certifications minimum: Three (3) automotive; three (3) medium/heavy truck; two (2) bus. Equivalent OEM/Vendor Authorized trainings may be substituted for ASE certifications.

  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience as a diesel mechanic with background in engine and brake repair, use of diagnostic computer equipment.

  • Must possess a thorough technical understanding of current engine technology, pay attention to detail, be dependable, and have solid verbal communication and documentation skills.

  • Must have demonstrated ability to work successfully as part of a team in a medium to large sized professional, customer-focused fleet service center, servicing a variety of diesel/gasoline engine equipment, light and medium duty trucks and vans, and a wide range of transit buses. 

  • Experience repairing diesel engines and large lawn and snow equipment desirable. 

  • Must possess or obtain within 6 months of hiring date a Massachusetts state commercial driver’s license.

  • Must possess valid driver’s license and have an excellent driving record.

  • Current DOT physical required.

OBDII diagnostic tools, scan tools, basic computer skills


Special Requirements:

  • Must possess a complete set of truck/automotive hand tools.

  • Will be required to wear a uniform provided by employer.

Certificates and Licenses

  • Must possess or obtain within 6 months of hiring date a Massachusetts state commercial driver’s license with “Passenger & Air Brake” endorsements. 

  • Must possess valid driver’s license and have an excellent driving record. Current DOT physical required.

Physical Requirements

  • Required to bend, reach, and hold awkward positions for prolonged periods. 

  • The incumbent needs the ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and to lift and transport various types of equipment and tools with the excess of 300 lbs. 

  • Must be able to push and pull heavy loads.
